Green dominates, reflecting a slower, natural rhythm, rooted in heritage, \u0026amp; culture. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003e\u003cspan class=\"s1\"\u003eFast and slow, City and Province, West and East, evening and morning, warm and cool, orange and green—the contrasts are intentional, designed to speak to each other. Covid hit in March and I was stranded in the Philippines. I spent a good portion of my time in the province—this basketball court is right across the street from our house.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe province is different. I imagine there's similarities in the West as well, with their countryside. Everything moves slower, and everything comes much closer. What do I mean?\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn the province, life is chill. Sitting around watching the day go by, watering the plants, feeding the dogs and the chickens, walking to the store, chatting with neighbours, standing by the corner, and before you know it ... it's night time. Everyone knows eachother and they say hi when they're walking by. They'll spontaneously drop in and just talk. They share food, they'll drink and share the same cup. They share all their cigarettes, and buy a new pack for everyone when it's done. They sit right next to you, close enough for your legs to touch. They put their arm on your shoulder when you're walking down the street. They talk louder and laugh harder. They don't need an aux cable, because they have a guitar. I imagine there's a negative side to this as well: things get done slowly, people are always late, and everyone knows your business.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eIf you ever meet someone who's always late, it might be because they—or their family— comes from a place where time doesn't matter, where everything moves slowly, where things don't have to be done now—they'll be done eventually, where simply arriving is the same as arriving on time. It's not because they're being inconsiderate or ungrateful, it's because everyone does it, and it's not an issue.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThis court reminds me of the province, because that's where everything happens: When you need to send money to relatives or buy a pack of smokes or a Coca-cola with a bag of ice—there's a Sari-Sari store (Equivalent to a convenience store) and a remittance place right beside the court. When there's a fiesta, thats where the games are situated. When there's a basketball tournament, everyone is there watching. I was enjoying my time in Manila, and when the lockdown took affect I made my way to my parents and extended family; It was the first time experiencing the Philippines (my homeland) as an adult.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWe were living in my late Grandma's house-a very old, unrenovated concrete house. The roof is made of one layer of corrugated iron sheets, and attached to the house by nails to the wooden skeleton of the house. The wood mentioned, was rotting and being eaten away by termites over the years, and the house is not really sealed from the outside world; Imagine 4 standing concrete walls in a rectangle, and you throw some wooden 2x4's on top and attach them to the concrete and structure and make them into the frame of the roof, and the throw on the iron roof on top of the wood. Birds, lizards, rats, and other animals can make their way through the openings right under the roof where the wood attach to the house. The house had no ceiling, if you were sitting in the living room and just looked up, you'd see the wood and iron roof, and that's all that was separating you from the elements. It was something to get used to, for sure.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eOn November 8 2020, Typhoon Ulysses hit the Philippines for several days, effecting Central Luzon the hardest. It caused extreme flooding, leading to over 70 dead, and many injuries. Luckily, my area of Bulacan is on the outskirts of the most affected area but the typhoon still left it's mark, causing power outages for weeks, road closures from debris, flooding, and damage to homes and businesses.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eI remember that night pretty clearly. We lost power early on in the evening, and the winds progressively got stronger and stronger, while raining. At it's peak, all you could hear is the wind rushing through our home, I was convinced that our roof would fly off eventually-somehow it didn't. I was looking out the front door glass and I couldn't see anything. I took a flashlight and pointed it out the glass and I just saw our plants fallen over and rain moving sideways from the strong wind; I could probably only see 2 metres in front of me.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eWhen the wind subsided, I went to bed and in the morning I decided to take my camera out and document what had happened. One of the photos I took was of this house, which was only a 2 minutes walk from ours. I pass this house all the time to go to the main street.
